I have often said, Mrs. Bargrave, that you are not only the best, but the only friend I have in the world, and no circumstance of life will ever dissolve my friendship.

They often pitied each other’s misfortunes and read Drelincourt on Death and other good books together. And so, like two Christian friends, they comforted each other in their sorrow.
After some time, Mr. Vale’s friends arrange for him a place in the Dover Customs, which causes Mrs. Vale to gradually withdraw her intimacy with Mrs. Bargrave, though never once.

But the indifference gradually increased, until at last Mrs. Bargrave did not see him for two and a half years.
Although for more than twelve months Mrs. Bargrave has been away from Dover, and during the last half-year she has been spending about two months in Canterbury, living in a house of her own.
